This dental disease is a bacterial infection and inflammation of the tissues that hold the tooth in the jawbone. After a long period of time, the teeth are lost due to loosening as a result of bone loss.

This disease cannot be recognized in time by the layperson, as the inflammation of the gums is completely painless, cannot be seen and there are almost no signs of periodontitis. The famous “bleeding gums” sometimes do not appear at all or only appear relatively late, when bone damage is already present. In order to recognize periodontitis, you need a professional examination of the gums by a dentist.

Due to inappropriate tooth brushing techniques, large accumulations of bacteria adhere to the tooth-gum junction, forming a tough, sticky layer (“biofilm”) after a few days. The adjacent gums become inflamed by the bacterial attack and swell up, the connection to the tooth becomes permeable, a gap forms (“pocket”) and the bacteria multiply undisturbed in this pocket. Cell toxins and increasingly aggressive bacteria typical of periodontitis accumulate there. After some time, the underlying bone is also attacked and recedes. In the case of periodontitis, all these processes often go unnoticed for years and are – unfortunately – painless.

Only a detailed examination for inflammation and gum pockets can reveal this gum disease. Laboratory tests, x-rays, determination of the location of bacterial plaques and determination of the tendency to bleed can contribute to a more accurate assessment of the severity of periodontal disease.

International research is discovering more and more specific damage to other organs caused by periodontitis bacteria: heart attacks, diabetes, strokes, eye diseases, allergies, asthma, intestinal and kidney diseases, tendency to premature birth.
